GPA Calculator β€” Compute Your Grade Point Average Online

The GPA calculator is a free tool that computes your cumulative Grade Point Average from letter grades and credit hours. It supports two popular scales: the US 4.0 GPA scale and the European ECTS grading system.

Select your scale, enter grades and credit hours β€” the calculator instantly shows your overall GPA along with the corresponding letter grade.

What Is GPA and Why Does It Matter?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average β€” a numerical indicator of a student's academic performance. It is a weighted average where each grade is converted to a point value and weighted by the number of credit hours for that course. The maximum on the US scale is 4.0 GPA, corresponding to straight A or A+ grades. Universities, employers, and scholarship programs use GPA to quickly assess a candidate's academic level.

GPA differs from the Polish grade average, which is based on a 1–6 scale. If you need to calculate a Polish weighted average, try our weighted average calculator.

How to Calculate GPA Step by Step

The process is straightforward: convert each letter grade to its point value (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0), multiply by the course's credit hours, sum all products, then divide by total credits.

Each course: grade value x credits = quality points
Total quality points / total credits = GPA
Example: A(4.0 x 3cr) + B(3.0 x 4cr) + A-(3.7 x 3cr) = 12+12+11.1 = 35.1 / 10 = 3.51 GPA

Our calculator handles these computations automatically. Just add courses, select a grade, enter credit hours, and your GPA appears instantly.

The 4.0 GPA Scale β€” What Do the Values Mean?

A perfect 4.0 GPA means straight A/A+ grades in every course. Above 3.5 is excellent, 3.0–3.5 is good, 2.5–3.0 is average, and below 2.0 typically falls below academic requirements. On the ECTS scale, the highest value is 5 (grade A) and the lowest passing grade is E (1 point).
